Host a Tarbell Fellow

The Tarbell Fellowship is a programme for early career journalists interested in covering artificial intelligence. We place fully-funded fellows at major newsrooms for 9-24 months.

We select from a competitive pool of 500+ candidates, identifying candidates with a deep understanding of artificial intelligence and its potential impacts on society. Fellows then complete an intensive 8-week AI Journalism Fundamentals Programme and attend a week-long journalism summit.

What Tarbell offers

Tarbell Fellows are fully funded

We provide stipends of $50,000+ to Tarbell Fellows to ensure journalism remains open to all. Our fellows are fully-funded through philanthropic support and thus free to their host organizations.

Newsrooms select who to host

Our 5-stage application process reliably identifies top candidates. We review writing samples, conduct interviews, and administer work tasks before introducing shortlisted candidates to newsrooms for interviews. Placement organisations typically interview 1-3 journalists across a two week period before selecting who they would like to host in their newsroom for 9 months.

Expertise in AI

We select fellows for their expertise in AI and their ability to communicate this effectively. Fellows then complete an intensive 8-week AI Journalism Fundamentals Programme and attend a week-long journalism summit.

Top talent from around the globe

We attract exceptional talent from around the globe. Our annual application process attracts 500+ top graduates from Columbia Journalism School, AI policy experts, and rising international journalists.

Trained by senior reporters

Tarbell Fellows provide value from day one. During the 10-week training period, Fellows pitch and produce a story each week, receiving detailed feedback from guest editors. They also attend sessions on fundamental reporting skills run by journalists with experience at The New York Times, The Economist, TIME, Rest of World, and many others.

Potential extension

We are open to funding placements up to 24 months in certain circumstances. Newsrooms initially commit to hosting Tarbell Fellows for 9 months and, if there is mutual interest in an extension, this can be considered.
